“Michigan has the capability to become America’s alternative energy development epicenter, and that offers a tremendous opportunity to diversify our economy and provide high-tech, high-wage, 21st century jobs to our residents. It is our duty to find a way to increase Michigan’s energy independence, and in the process, develop affordable, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly electric sources powered by Michigan’s businesses, Michigan innovation, and Michigan workers.”
Governor Jennifer Granholm, April 6, 2006
Michigan GREEN
Group for a Renewable Energy Efficient Nation
This group of energy companies and energy consultants, together with government agencies and schools, colleges, and universities, has joined forces to champion the cause of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Michigan. The expertise of the Michigan GREEN collaboration, will mark an important step forward in Michigan’s effort to become America’s epicenter for alternative energy development.
Michigan GREEN grew out of an energy program that began four years ago. In 2002, the M-TEC at Bay College submitted a grant proposal to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to establish a revolving loan program for energy efficiency projects at schools and local governments. Now, three grants (totaling $2.95 million) and forty eight energy projects later, the M-TEC at Bay College has ended its Northern Lights Energy Program (NLEP).
With a great deal of technical assistance and expertise from the State Energy Office (and other partners) the NLEP has proven energy efficiency is a solid investment. All of its projects are realizing energy savings substantial enough to cover their monthly loan payments back to the NLEP. While these payments will continue for 5-10 years, the NLEP will no longer be seeking new projects.
When Michigan GREEN project proposals come together, the list of Michigan winners will be impressive:
The Environment – Cleaner air, cleaner water.
The Economy – Cobasys and UNI-SOLAR's research and engineering operations are here in Michigan. As theses technologies expand across the United States, the impact on Michigan’s economy could be huge.
Taxpayers – The MPSC has always focused its grant awards on those programs that benefit Michigan taxpayers. Installing renewable energy devices at public schools and government facilities will realize significant savings for them at a time when their budgets are in desperate need of assistance. Local governments will also be able to identify renewable energy system opportunities, and their residents will benefit from those savings. All citizens, as well, will reap the health benefits of cleaner air and cleaner water.
Students – What better way to excite the next generation of energy engineers and visionaries than provide them with a field study project outside the classroom door. Electrical output and pollution prevention data from the school’s renewable energy device will be monitored and studied by students. They will also be able to track the energy savings realized from their system. Energy will be an important issue for generations to come, and Michigan’s proactive approach with its youth will lead our state’s efforts in becoming the alternative energy development epicenter.
