Uni-Solar's Panels Shine At Emmys
Alternative Energy

Auburn Hills-based United Solar Ovonic, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER) said Monday that its flexible, lightweight thin-fil Uni-Solar photovoltaic panels helped generate electricity and shade the crowd during Sunday night's 59th annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Uni-Solar PV laminates were installed on 2,700-square-foot of metal roofing manufactured to form a sun canopy. Several hundred attendees, who won a lottery for a seat in the bleachers, were able to view their favorite TV celebrities walking the red carpet while shielded from the sun.

The solar system was grid-tied into the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power utility grid and generated enough electricity to power three to four California homes.

Performance data of the 12.5-kilowatt solar array was displayed on a data acquisition system that offered real-time monitoring of the power output along with three utility interactive inverters by PV Powered.

Advanced Green Technologies Inc. provided engineering and integration assistance for the standing seam metal roof, supplied and installed by Englert Inc. E-Village Solar, a California solar system design and installation firm, provided PV system disconnects, wiring and installation assistance.

The sun canopy will be transferred to the Chime Charter Middle School, located in Chatsworth, Calif.

United Solar also announced an 18-month agreement with EDF Energies Nouvelles of Paris, France for the suply of 12 megawatts of Uni-Solar PV cells.

The agreement also had an option to buy an additional 18 megawatts.

EDF will use the laminates to develop its photovoltaic business, especially in the building-integrated segment.

Unlike traditional crystalline technology, which typically uses heavy glass panels, Uni-Solar products are flexible, durable, lightweight, and easy to install. Because of these characteristics, Uni-Solar products offer the ideal solution for both grid-connected and off-grid solar electric systems. Independent studies in Europe and elsewhere have shown that triple-junctionproducts deliver more energy per rated power than the conventional crystalline products.
