Green Energy Fuels Utilities
Alternative Energy

Utilities like green energy. They also like the tax benefits that come with providing them. While such investments have proved fruitful, power companies are expressing concerns that those emerging technologies are still expensive and that the permitting process is just as onerous as other fuel sources.

Much of the growth so far in the renewable energy sector is largely because of government-sponsored tax breaks and state renewable mandates that instruct utilities to provide a certain level of green energy. The goal is to create demand, which in turn attracts suppliers to the field and ultimately leads to the development of newer and better products and services. It's not just good for the environment. It's also healthy for companies' bottom lines.

Driven by the Wind: Steven Smiley's Windmills may Lead Us out of the Dark Ages o
Alternative Energy
There's a new attraction in Mackinaw City that nearly as thrilling to visitors as their first glimpse of the Bridge: two power-generating windmills thrum the breezes of the Mackinac Straits along I-75 as you drive into town. By the end of the summer there will be five windmills in all, generating enough power to meet the needs of about 1,500 homes.

Illinois House Overwhelmingly Passes Renewable Energy Standard
Alternative Energy
Today, the Illinois House of Representatives passed a Renewable Energy Standard (HB1871) requiring the state to buy 2% of its power from renewable energy sources by 2008, 10% by 2015, and setting a goal of 25% by 2025. The 103-12 vote puts Illinois in a strong position to take advantage of the huge environmental benefits and economic potential that renewable energy -- most specifically, wind power -- offers in Illinois.
